K̓esugwilakw is an Indigiqueer stélmexw from the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw and is also Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw/Musga̱mgw Dzawada̱’enuxw, Łingít and Magyar/Hungarian. Sierra is a trained contemporary dancer and began performing as a professional fire and flow performance artist in 2013. Sierra is one of the choreographers for Butterflies in Spirit, an Indigenous dance group consisting of family members of Missing and Murdered Indigenous People raising awareness for the MMIP crisis. Working with concepts of shapeshifting, time, transformation, and healing, K̓esugwilakw works with movement as a modality for their healing and processing trauma. K̓esugwilakw’s form of “movement storytelling” works to challenge their audiences to question what is traditional and what is contemporary?
